Wilhelm Automotive

A History of Automotive Service Excellence

Wilhelm Automotive’s business began in Arizona in the late 1880s when the original settlers arrived from Peoria, Illinois. A gentleman by the name of Tuck Blackwell set up a blacksmith shop to serve the desert natives. He eventually sold his shop, and it became a repair shop named the Jennings Brother’s Garage.

In 1928, Joe Wilhelm partnered with his uncle John Ansel to buy the garage from Jennings, and Wilhelm Automotive was born. The main stay for early business came from farmers who depended on Wilhelm to keep their machinery in running order so they themselves wouldn’t lose vital business hours. Joe, a real brotherly sort – and the one who set the legacy for our shop’s standards today – regularly accepted crates of vegetables as payment.

In 1979, the garage was sold to Charley and Mary Jane Gyder, who continued the tradition of the family business with their sons, Thomas and Doug, both of whom still play a big role in the company today. In 1996, Wilhelm Automotive expanded to occupy five locations, with the Peoria operation remaining as the company headquarters. Today Chris Garman, grandson of Charley and Mary Jane Gyder, is the 3rd generation to run the family business.

The philosophy that Joe Wilhelm established was very simple and remains the same today – perform quality service, do everything you can to accommodate your customers, and always give back to your community.
